Car Care Tips: Protecting Your Investment

The summer season can be a difficult time of the year for vehicles. High temperatures, extended sun exposure, high humidity and other factors combine to create significant wear and tear on your car. With summer in full swing, it’s important to make sure you’re maintaining the key areas of your vehicle properly. A few simple tips can help ensure that you protect the investment you’ve made in your vehicle and maximize its lifespan.

Oil is one of the most commonly known and one of the most essential items to maintain. The make and model of your vehicle, as well as the type of oil that should be used on it, can affect how often you’ll need to have your oil changed. Conventional oil should be changed roughly every 3,000 – 4,000 miles. When it comes to synthetic oil formulations, you should expect to have it changed every 5,000 – 6,000 miles. In addition to oil changes, all serviceable fluids need to be checked and changed when necessary. This includes transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and engine coolant.

To ensure optimal performance, items under the hood such as belts and hoses must be maintained as well. High temperatures (both climate-related and the heat created by engine operation) create wear and tear. Having an ASE certified mechanic to keep an eye on these parts can help avoid large expenses like a blown radiator hose or broken serpentine belt down the road.

Even though there’s usually a brake light to notify you when they need service, make sure you don’t forget about your brake pads and rotors. Over time brake pads wear out and rotors warp, which can compromise the capabilities of your brake system. At Sun Auto Service, you can have your brakes checked during your oil change service to help prevent major repairs later on.

Keep your vehicle running at its best by abiding by your vehicle’s recommended scheduled maintenance guidelines, typically listed in your Operations Manual. Staying on top of maintenance services can help save on unexpected and unnecessary repair costs!
