Enchanted Rock
Located just 18 miles north of Fredericksburg, a German-cultured town, is Enchanted Rock. Climb up the dome for spectacular views of Hill Country. Arrive early on weekends and school holidays as most days, this state park reaches capacity. Filled with nearly 11 miles of hiking trails, this area is sure to please everyone from the young to the young at heart. The Interpretive Loop is an easy ½ mile hike while the pet-friendly Loop Trail is 4.25 miles and offers a slight detour to the Scenic View Trail with a scenic overlook. Backpackers will enjoy the primitive camping areas throughout the park that requires a hike to and from. Wildlife enthusiasts and birders will enjoy the fauna native to this area including armadillo, white tailed deer, and more. The visitor’s center offers interpretive exhibits, an overview of wildlife in the area, and a gift shop to purchase souvenirs to commemorate your visit. The park is open year-round but does close to the public during hunting season in the fall and winter months. Enchanted Rock is an International Dark Sky Park that offers stargazing programs to view the incredible night sky.
Route 66
Route 66 also known as Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America, or the Mother Road is one of the first major highway systems within the U.S. The highway runs through Chicago, IL through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, ending in Santa Monica, CA covering an incredible 2,448 miles. Take a trip down memory lane to get your kicks and view some of the most popular attractions in Texas.
In Amarillo you’ll find The Big Texan Steak Ranch restaurant and hotel. It’s the number one steakhouse in Texas and is home to the 72-ounce steak. If you eat it and all the fixings it comes with under an hour, it’s free! After your big meal, stop by Cadillac Ranch, a public art sculpture created in 1974 with ten vintage Cadillacs half-buried to their windshields. Inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, this spectacle draws thousands every year. Be sure to bring a can of spray paint to add to the art display before you leave.
In Shamrock, Texas, you’ll find the infamous U-Drop Inn. Built in 1936 with an Art Deco style, this easily identified two-tower landmark gives the authentic appearance of the antiquated 1940s gas station. Fans of the Disney movie “Cars,” will recognize the building as Ramone’s garage.
Finally, in Groom Texas you’ll find two exciting landmarks that have drawn the attention of travelers for decades: The Leaning Water Tower and The Giant Cross. The Leaning Water Tower was once a functioning water tower destined for demolition when it was purchased for use as a sign advertising a restaurant to passing motorists. The Giant Cross stretches to a towering 190 feet in the air and is visible for miles around. Near the building you’ll also find a series of biblical sculptures and a peaceful fountain.
Galveston
As an island on the Gulf Coast of Texas, Galveston is a popular destination for travelers and is a hub for several cruise ships, which means there will be plenty of activities to see and do.
For a day trip with the family, consider a stop at these many attractions: Moody Gardens with glass pyramids housing animal experiences, water park, and interactive science exhibits. Looking to cool off? How about a visit to Schlitterbahn Water Park? Here you’ll find lazy rivers, wave pools, and thrilling water slides.
