For many people, fall is the most favorite season. After a long, hot summer, the crisp cool air that fall brings is enough for anyone to fall in love with the season. In addition to the cooler temperatures and the beginning of “the holidays,” there is so much to do. In fact, there are so many events and things to do in Texas in the fall, you might find yourself overwhelmed. So, we’ve created a list of the best fall things to do in Texas to help make your decision a little easier.

Austin City Limits Music Festival

Scheduled for two weekends, October 4th– 6th and 11th – 13th, this music festival offers a diverse lineup of acts spread amongst eight stages with more than 140 bands at Zilker Park off of Barton Springs Road. Musical artists include Guns ‘N Roses, Childish Gambino, Mumford and Sons, Cardi B., Billie Eilish, and many, many more! A food court is available offering delicious foods, drinks, and desserts from Austin area restaurants. An art market is available along with a special kids area, making the whole event family-friendly.

Wurstfest

In New Braunfels, an event that is so similar to Oktoberfest, you may forget you’re in Texas. The 10-day event, beginning November 1st, includes traditional German fare including schnitzels, strudels, Bavarian pretzels, bratwurst, and beer. Music, dancing, and a contest called masskrugstemmen, where one must hold a stein full of beer, with an outstretched arm, for the longest amount of time.

Barton Hill Farms Fall Festival & Pumpkin Patch

September 28th– November 3rd Admission includes access to the corn maze, human foosball and other games, giant tube roll, extreme air pillow, duck races, animal petting zoo, train rides, and more! Pick your own pumpkin to carve at home and don’t forget to have a bite to eat! The farm will be serving up delicious barbecue, tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, and more!

State Fair of Texas

September 27 – October 20 at Fair Park in Dallas. Since 1886 the State Fair of Texas has celebrated the Texan culture by promoting education and agriculture and is considered one of the best fairs in America. Opening day begins with a parade through downtown Dallas. When you arrive at the fairgrounds, you’ll be greeted by the fair’s mascot, Big Tex, a 55-foot tall statue, known as the World’s Biggest Cowboy. The State Fair of Texas is also the birthplace of all unusual fried foods including the deep-fried Oreo, deep-fried s’mores, and new this year, the Buffalo Chicken Chimichanga. Come for the food, the attractions, and the concerts. This year you can expect to see such acts as 98 degrees, Daughtry, Billy Ray Cyrus, Rick Springfield, and many more. Fun for the whole family, there is so much to see. Don’t miss the return of the World of Birds Show, the All-Star Dog Stunt Show, Backyard Circus, magic shows, and more.

45th Annual Texas Renaissance Festival

The largest and most attended Renaissance Festival in the country begins October 5th and runs every weekend through December 1st in Todd Mission. The festival takes you on a journey to the 16th century with live entertainment, interactive characters, shopping, and plenty of food choices for feasting. Since 2005, every weekend offers a different theme including Oktoberfest, Pirate Adventure, All Hallows Eve, and even a Celtic Christmas. The gates open at 9:00 AM with the firing of the canon and closes at 8:00 PM with the Royal Fireworks show.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Located near Vanderpool, and chock full of many species of oak, maple, sycamore, Texas persimmon, and Texas mountain-laurel trees, it makes for a stunning landscape of gold, crimson, and orange hues that are synonymous with autumn. Considered the best trees for fall color in Texas, the Natural Area’s fall colors are best viewed in late October or early November. Hiking, fishing, and birdwatching are some of the many activities you can do while taking in the natural beauty fall has to offer. Camping areas are available with access to water and electricity as well as more primitive campsites.

Boo at the Zoo

Visit the Austin Zoo for Boo at the Zoo every Friday and Saturday in October from 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM for a howling good time! Wear your best costume, ride the haunted train, dare to walk through the Haunted House, and spy the zoo animals at night with your flashlight. The entire zoo will be decked out for Halloween. Bring a picnic or sty by the concession truck for treats—no tricks!

Dark Harvest Spookfest at Pioneer Farms

The living museum that is a step back into the 1800s introduces Dark Harvest, a Halloween Haunted Trails Festival October 18th & 19th, October 25-27th, and October 31st from 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM. Fun for all ages, Dark Harvest features a Ghost Run haunted trail, pumpkin carving contests, live music for dancing, and spooky storytelling. Treats are available from the Halloween food trucks as well.

Pflugerville Pfall Chili PFest

The 12th annual Chili Fest in Downtown Pflugerville along Main Street from Rail Road Avenue to 4th Street from Noon until 5:00 PM Saturday, October 19th. The event includes live music featuring Blind Innocence, chili tasting, jalapeno eating contest with a cash prize to whoever can eat the most in four minutes, as well as a pickle eating contest for the kids. Bring an empty stomach to stop by each booth and taste and vote for your favorite chili!

Austin Steam Train Pumpkin Express

Take a ride on the 3-hour round trip Pumpkin Express presented by the Austin Steam Train Association, October 27th at 11:00 AM. The train takes you to Bertram where you’ll deboard and spend 30 minutes picking out the best pumpkin from the Depot Pumpkin Patch. Take time to explore the historic train depot dating back to 1912 and enjoy a nice mug of hot apple cider.
