Great Austin Road Trips: New Braunfels

If you want to do something fun with the kids this summer, you don’t have to go very far from Austin. New Braunfels, less than an hour and a half from Austin, boasts some incredible outdoor activities for the whole family. Get your car tuned up, pack a picnic basket, and take a road trip down to New Braunfels to experience some of the greatest sights and recreation.

The Comal River

You are always welcome to take a stroll alongside the river, try paddle boating or even go canoeing, but what really takes the cake is tubing down the river. With a temperature of 70-72 degrees all year, there’s never a bad time to throw on your suit, grab a tube, and go for a ride. The Comal River is a natural waterway that comes from a spring, making it a unique and refreshing experience.

Schlitterbahn

Down the Comal River a little way, you’ll see the Schlitterbahn water park. The park offers kiddie pools, a surf pool, and water coasters. If you want to just sit and relax, you can hang out in the hot tub while your kids go and enjoy themselves. The resort offers beautiful rooms with incredible views. With various water slides and pools, you don’t have to rest until you’re ready.

River Road

If you’re looking to go on a drive, take a fishing trip, or even stop and camp, River Road has some breathtaking scenery. It heads to the west and ends up at Canyon Lake, where you can play in the water, take a tour of the park, or visit the dam. The relaxing, isolated atmosphere gives you time to reflect and enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer without going too far from home.

Of course, while you’re in New Braunfels, you can’t miss out on the museums. When you need a break from the heat of the outdoors, spend a few hours at the McKenna Children’s Museum, the New Braunfels Fire Department Museum, or the Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture. If you’re still willing to spend some time outdoors but would like to experience the history of the area, visit the Historic Outdoor Art Museum, take a New Braunfels Walking Tour, or check out the New Braunfels Arboretum.

There is so much to do just a short drive away. If you want to take the road trip of a lifetime, head out of Austin and visit the many sights to be found in New Braunfels. You won’t be sorry you did, it’s a great way to spend quality time with the family, not too far from home.
