What to Do If You Break Down on the Interstate

Although you might not think a breakdown will happen to you, it is important to know what to do if your vehicle fails in order to keep yourself and others safe. It can be hard to prepare for the unknown, but having a few general guidelines in your back pocket can come in handy. These tips can help you if you find yourself on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.

Get to the Right Side of the Road

Should your car break down, immediately merge over to the right shoulder of the interstate, by coasting if possible. Make sure you use your signals while merging, so other drivers are aware of what you are doing. Continue to coast along the shoulder away from any curves behind you and try to reach an exit.

Make Yourself Visible

Vehicles on the interstate drive quickly so it is essential that you make yourself visible, especially at night. Some ways you can do this are by turning on your hazard lights, raising your hood or turning on the lights inside your car if it is dark. You can also place reflectors on and behind your vehicle to alert other drivers.

Stay Away From Traffic

Even if you can pull off to the shoulder of the interstate, it is advised that you stay inside your car with the doors locked to remain safe. However, if you must get out of your vehicle, always exit and stay on the side that is facing away from traffic.

Get Help

If you find yourself in this situation, know that there are people that can assist you. Immediately call 911, local police, or roadside assistance so they can help you get to safety. If you’re unable to get your car running, have it towed to the nearest Sun Auto Service location, where experts will get your vehicle up and running again in no time.
