What Can an Independent Auto Shop do that the Dealer Can’t?

If you aren’t handy or don’t like difficult DIY projects, you definitely want to have your vehicle serviced professionally for all maintenance and repair needs. You might be torn between taking your vehicle to an independent auto shop, like Sun Auto Service, or a dealership. Knowing the differences between the two can help save you both time and money!

A Higher Focus on Customer Satisfaction and Service

As an independent auto repair shop, we do everything we can to ensure our customers are fully satisfied with our services. This isn’t to say that dealerships don’t try to pull out all of the stops to keep customers coming back. Independent shops have the opportunity to be more personable, offer more convenient locations, closer to home, offer same day services that dealers are unable to provide, and create a relationship with customers that dealerships may not.

Less Expensive Routine Maintenance and Repairs Not Covered by Your Warranty

An independent repair shop can cover all of your vehicle’s needs, ranging from routine maintenance services to major repairs, and save money on those services. Dealerships may charge you more for repairs that aren’t covered by your vehicle’s warranty. Know that you don’t always have to take your vehicle to the dealership to ensure your warranty remains intact.

Even if you have an extensive problem that requires more in-depth knowledge of the make and model of your vehicle, you can be confident that the technicians at local shops can service your vehicle as well. Technicians have access to software programs and records that provide them with the same information as dealerships. Sun Auto Service utilizes the same equipment as the dealership, in most cases.

ASE Certified Technicians

Just like the technicians at dealerships receive factory-authorized instruction, the technicians at independent auto shops can (and should) be ASE Certified. At Sun Auto Service, we only employ ASE Certified technicians, and their certifications need to be renewed every five years. This certification means the technician has received the education and completed the necessary exams for certifications such as:

  • Auto maintenance and light repair
  • Truck equipment
  • Advanced engine performance
  • Parts specialist
  • Alternate fuels
  • Automobile service consultant

You Get to See Who’s Working on Your Car

Just like you want to see the doctor or surgeon who’s going to be operating on you, it makes sense to want to see who’s going to be working on your car;  that’s especially true when you need to have a major repair done. Something else to bear in mind is that there’s a good chance someone new will be working on your car every time you take it into the dealership.
