Living somewhere where it gets very hot during the summer can be rough on your vehicle’s air conditioner. Although you should get your vehicle serviced frequently to keep it in top shape, there are a few things that you can do in between services to keep your car cool and help your air conditioner perform optimally.
Use the Fresh Air or Recirculate Settings
Depending on the humidity level of where you live, you should be turning on certain settings while using your air conditioner. If you live somewhere with a drier climate, use the fresh air setting. This takes air from outside and cools it down quickly while keeping it dry. However, if you live somewhere that is humid, use the recirculate setting. Doing so avoids using the moist air outside and can more easily cool down the car.
Keep Your Vehicle Cool While Parked
One of the worst parts of the summer is getting into your car after it has been sitting in the sun for a long period of time. However, there are a few things you can do to keep your vehicle cooler while it’s parked. First, slightly crack the windows open so the air in your car can circulate. You should also use a sunshade to block the sun from coming in your windshield. This helps keep the heat out while protecting your dashboard. Another investment that can help keep your vehicle cool is having your windows tinted.
Roll Down the Windows
Many people have the misconception that rolling down your windows will just let the warm air heat the car. However, when you first get in your car, rolling down your windows can help it cool down faster. When your vehicle sits in the sun for a long period of time, the temperature inside can become hotter than outside. As a result, when you begin driving, keep your windows down for 30 seconds to a minute to allow all of the heat to filter out. You can then roll them back up and turn on your air conditioning.
Check Your Vehicle for Low Refrigerant and Other Issues
If you have followed all of these tips and your auto AC system is still not keeping your car cool, then it is likely low on refrigerant or has some other underlying issue. The best thing to do in this situation is to take your vehicle to an expert to have it inspected and repaired.
