The automotive industry is an ever-changing and evolving business that requires all experts in the field to keep up on the latest trends and changes. With education, knowledge, and training, Sun Auto Service is able to keep up with this fast-paced industry to be of service to all drivers from their personal vehicles to business fleet vehicles.
Vehicle manufacturers have added many features to cars, trucks, and SUVs for both driver convenience and to keep up with the standards put in place by the Environmental Protection Agency, including the onboard diagnostic system that monitors the vehicle’s functionality and emissions. These developments are ideal for drivers as they increase safety and save money with better fuel economy. Where there are complicated mechanisms to provide these functions, there must be experts who understand their function and how they can be remedied if they fail. These are the kind of professionals you’ll find at Sun Auto Service.
Many employees with Sun Auto Service possess a longevity within the industry and maintain their professionalism and knowledge through frequent training and education provided by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. By employing ASE Certified Technicians, it’s our promise to you that your vehicle is being serviced by the best of the best in the industry and with the credentials to prove it.
Strong companies require strong leadership and our location in beautiful Cedar Park, Texas is no exception. We sat down with Store Manager, Alan Smith to discuss what he enjoys most about working in the automotive field and how he and his team keep up on the vast changes that accompany modern vehicles. With 30 years in the industry, Alan admits that he’s no spring chicken, but with his knowledge has instead become a “wise owl” of sorts, when it comes to auto care and maintenance.
- How did you get your start in the automotive repair industry?
I was about 15 years old and started working on hot rods with my brother. In Colorado there used to be a cruising spot that we used to race with other cars. The high-speed and excitement got me hooked.
- What’s your favorite auto repair to complete?
I really enjoy rebuilding race car motors. I have a 1969 El Camino with a large block, tall deck 427 with a blown alcohol engine. Nothing makes me happier than driving that car.
- What’s your favorite type of vehicle to make repairs on?
Our technicians specialize in all makes and models, but I personally enjoy working on Chevy’s!
- What are the qualities a Sun Auto Service technician possesses?
Our technicians must be qualified to work on every make and model of cars and light trucks. Our Master Technicians are certified in more complicated and intricate vehicle systems. Our technicians are ready to take on any challenge that a vehicle presents from unique and complicated to simple fixes, “Bring it on!” they say.
- What type of training do your technicians need to complete? What’s included in this training?
Our technicians need specialized training, such as diagnostics, engine, and transmission training. Some of our new technicians receive mentoring from our highly-trained technicians with years of experience. Some of the training can include technical school education and others could include taking a refresher course to reiterate prior knowledge and introduce changes within the industry.
- What’s the most commonly asked question you get about automotive repair?
We are most frequently asked, “How much will this service cost?” and “How long will it take?” Automotive repair and maintenance is not always the top of the list when it comes to spending money, most consumers would rather use the funds in many other ways. But I believe that if you take care of your car, it will take care of you. Spend some money by having maintenance services done and you’ll likely save yourself hundreds or even thousands of dollars down the road by preventing expensive repairs. At Sun Auto Service, we know how inconvenient it can be to be without a vehicle. That’s why our technicians work as quickly as possible so that, in most cases, our customers have their vehicle back in the same day.
- If you could dismiss one myth about automotive maintenance/repair, what would that be?
One myth that I wish I could dismiss would be that technicians are untrustworthy. Sure, there are some “bad apples” in any industry, that ruin it for the whole bunch, but most technicians are hardworking, intelligent, and empathetic people who want to help their customers. Also, repair shops are not always the reason why your car breaks down. For example, a car may come in for an oil change but a week later break down. This doesn’t necessarily mean the repair shop is responsible for the break down. While it’s certainly coincidental, vehicles are machines that will eventually fail and sometimes it just happens.
- What is your favorite part of the job? Your favorite part about working for Sun Auto Service?
My favorite part about working for Sun Auto Service is the interaction with customers, meeting new people every day, and the support of everybody within our company. In three different states, everyone in the company cares for each other as if you are a member of the family. The strong and supportive leadership makes employees want to come to work. I can’t think of anything better.
- What’s the number one tip you would provide to car owners about maintaining their vehicle?
Spend a little money on preventative maintenance when they’re recommended if you want your car to last. You’ll save money on preventable repairs or a new car purchase. New cars are expensive these days!
As Alan says, preventative maintenance is one of the best things a car owner can do to avoid expensive repairs or the trouble of having to purchase a new vehicle. Whether your ride is a commuter car, an old trusty truck, or a car that’s “just for fun,” Sun Auto Service should be your number one choice for maintenance. Each vehicle can vary on specific maintenance service and some services aren’t applicable to certain vehicles.
