Spring to Summer: How To Prepare Your Car for the Weather

It won’t be long before the cooler spring temperatures fade into blistering hot summer temperatures. Not only can these temperatures be uncomfortable for you, they can also take a toll on your car. Summer can worsen existing underlying issues that you may or may not have noticed. Be sure you and your automobile are ready for the summer with our spring to summer checklist of essentials.

Engine

The engine is an essential component in your vehicle and the oil is the lifeblood. Severe driving conditions require maintenance services more often. Be sure your oil is changed between 5,000 – 7,000 miles. Ensure your oil change includes a vehicle inspection to ensure no pings, hard starts, or idling issues occur while the engine is running.

Cooling System

Coolant should be flushed and replaced every 30,000 miles or every two years. If you notice your car or truck’s temperature gauge is running hotter than usual, take it to a service center for an inspection right away. Prevent overheating before it occurs. Frequent engine overheating can be a detriment to the engine.

Tire Care

Rotating your tires every 6,000 miles ensures they wear evenly, making them last longer. Make sure your technician also checks the suspension including alignment, as well as the tire tread and pressures.

Visually Inspect Components

Belts and hoses are made of rubber which will wear out over time, often because of excessive heat. Batteries should be tested on a regular basis and terminals should be clean.

Exterior Elements

Check to make sure your turn signals, brakes, reverse, and headlights are in working order. If they appear dim or if your turn signals flash quickly, it may be time to replace the light bulbs. Windshield wipers are made mostly of rubber and will dry out and break apart. Replacing there every spring and fall (every six months) is a good rule of thumb.

On the Road

Even the most well-maintained vehicle can experience troubles while on the road. Be prepared for these situations or emergencies by packing the following items:

    • Cell phone and charger
    • Spare tire
    • Flashlight
    • Emergency flares
    • First Aid Kit & medications
    • Drinking water
    • Non-perishable snack foods
    • Blankets
    • Basic tool kit
