Since 1972, this nonprofit group has worked to improve auto repair services, establishing standards to recognize those technicians with proven, comprehensive knowledge of one or more specialties in their field.
What Does It Take to Become Certified?
Earning one’s ASE Certification is certainly no easy task. Each technician that is recognized must possess at least two years of training on the job, or one year of job training plus a two-year auto repair degree. The individual must then pass at least one of over 40 individual ASE examinations, which cover everything from light repairs and general maintenance to specialized skills such as undercar exhaust systems.
These exams are designed by panels made up of industry professionals, including educators, auto and aftermarket parts manufacturers, and technicians currently working in the field. The tests are no cakewalk, either – according to ASE, only about two-thirds of test-takers pass on their first attempt. Additionally, exam content changes periodically to reflect changes and advancements in industry technology, and all technicians must retest every five years in order to remain certified.
